Moto Curious? 3 Ways to Learn to Ride a Motorcycle

Learning to ride a motorcycle can be intimidating, especially for women who have no prior experience with two-wheeled vehicles. However, with the right training, practice, and patience anyone can confidently and safely hit the road on a motorcycle. In this article, we will discuss three effective ways for women to learn how to ride a motorcycle.

  1. Take a Motorcycle Safety Course

A motorcycle safety course is an essential step for any new rider, regardless of their gender. These courses are designed to teach riders the basics of motorcycle operation and essential safety skills and strategies. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic Rider Course is an excellent starting point for novice riders with little or no experience. The course covers crucial topics such as motorcycle controls, riding posture, braking, turning, and defensive riding techniques. Riders who complete this course will receive a certificate that can be used to obtain a motorcycle license in most states.

I took the MSF Basic Rider Course and found it to be an excellent way to learn the basics of riding a motorcycle. We started in the classroom setting then learned how to ride in a parking lot.

According to a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, taking a motorcycle safety course reduces the likelihood of a crash by 90%.

2. Learn from a Professional Instructor

Taking lessons from a professional motorcycle instructor is another effective way for women to learn how to ride a motorcycle safely. Many motorcycle dealerships and riding schools offer one-on-one training sessions with experienced instructors. These sessions can be customized to the rider's skill level and are a great way to build confidence and skill on the bike. Professional instructors can also provide valuable feedback and guidance on areas that need improvement. Additionally, they can help riders learn more advanced riding techniques, such as riding on different types of terrain or in inclement weather. Private instructors are more expensive than rider courses however they are a great option for hyper focused instruction.

3. Practice Regularly

Finally, the best way for women to become confident and skilled motorcycle riders is to practice as much as possible. After taking a safety course or lessons with an instructor, it's crucial to get out on the road and practice riding in a variety of conditions. Start with short rides in low-traffic areas and gradually work up to longer rides on busier roads. Practice basic skills such as braking and turning, as well as more advanced techniques like counter-steering and emergency maneuvers. Remember that learning to ride a motorcycle is a continuous process, and it takes time and practice to become a skilled and confident rider.

I rode around neighborhoods for 6 months until I felt comfortable enough to ride further and in traffic. I went to empty school parking lots and practiced maneuverability. My best advice is to challenge yourself to work on your slow maneuverability skills.

Learning to ride a motorcycle can be an exciting and empowering experience. By taking a motorcycle safety course, learning from a professional instructor, and practicing regularly, women can build the skills and confidence needed to enjoy the open road on two wheels.
